Description: An Interesting Session on Philately A hobby helps in our inherent growth. Stamp collecting, related to philately, which is the study of stamps has been one of the world’s most popular hobbies since the late nineteenth century.
Major (Dr.) Ritu kalra, founder- President, Himachal Philately Club, enlightened the students of middle school during a workshop on philately. She was accompanied by Ram Tirath Sharma (Senior Post Master, G.P.O.), Ms Aprajita IPS), Mr. D.D. Sharma and Mr. Lalit Sharma.
She explained that anyone could collect stamps but one who studies about stamps and further does research to understand the idea and concept behind it is a real philatelist. Major Ritu shared a brief note on the history of postal services and the birth of the first stamp in 1852 by the Britishers. She further went on to explain certain technical terms associated with the printing of stamps such as imperfs, lithographs, watermarks as well as commemorative and definitive stamps, with the help of power point presentation she took the students on a historical journey of philately.
Philatic Bureau In-Charge Shimla Mr. D.D. Sharma apprised the students about the concept of ‘My Stamp’. He informed the children about stamp designing competition held before Children’s day. The best drawing selected is then made into a stamp. He further inspired the students to write letters and participate in the Deen Dayal Sparsh Yojana as well, under which annual scholarships are given to the children .
Mrs Rana, our History teacher who is an active philatelist contributed in the organisation of this important event. The day ended on a Positive note as the school Principal Sr. A Nirmala thanked the postal delegates and Major Ritu for an insightful session for the students.
